The proposed ground track
When we plot a course to steer, the first thing we need to do is draw a line from our starting point through our destination, which gives us our proposed ground track (Fig 8.1). We should always draw the line a little further than needed and shall explain this ‘over plotting’ shortly.
The start of our plot could be from a fix or from an estimated position. We basically start the plot from where we think the boat is or starting from. As with any other kind of plot we always mark up our positions, fixes etc with the correct time and log reading.
