RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Theory

A comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.

No previous experience is necessary however some practical experience will be helpful. This course is a first step in becoming a skipper: the course is advised for anyone planning to undertake the RYA Day Skipper practical course.

RYA Day Skipper Theory Options
Evening Classes Evening classes are held on Wednesday evenings between 6.30-10.00pm. Enrolment dates throughout winter 2015/16 but places may become limited – book now!
5 Day We run a 5 day weekday / weekend courses with a minimum of 2 students to suit participants diaries. Give us a call or email with the dates your require.
Personal Tuition We will run personalised tution at mutally agreed times and venue.
Course duration 40 hours with two exam papers

  • The basics of seamanship.
  • The essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage.
  • Chartwork.
  • Electronic charts.
  • Position fixing.
  • Plotting a course to steer.
  • Weather forecasting and meteorology
  • tides.
  • Collision regulations.
  • Construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat.
  • Emergency and safety procedures. including distress calls,use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts.
